Description
ROMAN SUBARMALIS
DESCRIPTION
The Roman Subarmalis was a padded garment worn under armor in ancient Rome, primarily beneath the lorica segmentata or chainmail (lorica hamata). Its purpose was to provide additional protection and comfort by cushioning the body against the weight and pressure of the armor while also absorbing some of the impact from weapons. It was typically made of layers of linen or wool and could also help reduce chafing and overheating during battle.
